BROTTSKOD 11 - Levande Döda Tape

After looking at the artwork of this tape regarding to the title "living dead" I expected another boring Misfits-clone, playing this slow kind of horror-punk, so many bands does. Only empty phrases dealing with every zombie chlichee you can imagine. But almost after a few seconds of listening to BROTTSKOD 11 (by the way I didn't find out what the bandname means... is it similar to "without a trace..."?) I had to accept that this stuff is one of the greatest hardcore-punk tapes I ever listened to. You will get eight songs with Swedish lyrics but after a short mail I got the English translation from Frederik, who is responsible for the brutal vocals, so I can tell you a little bit what they are singing about. For sure they handle with some topics that fits to their style and outfits but not devoid of meaning or just because they have to sang about, because they look like zombies. Songs about the death and the sense of death are well thought out even though the song "Levande Död" is a paradigm of zombie chlichees, but it kicks ass! The other songs are very sociocritical (about the media, the latest riots in Egypt or actually about Fukushima in Japan), short, straight in your head... hah, I really enjoyed listening to this tape. Search on You-Tube and watch their video-clip, visit their homepage and order a tape, before they are all sold-out. You won't find a download-link with these eight songs at this place, just a link to their page, where you can listen to four songs and the English translation of the lyrics. "They keep coming back in a bloodthirsty lust..."

NITAD - Den Gudomliga Världen EP

This band out of Stockholm released a bunch of singles and all of them with an extraordinary wonderful artwork. They play a really cool style of hardcore punk and because of the German zine Plastic Bomb (there's an interview with them) I was indicated with their rough music. I never saw them live but would love to do in future... most of their songs are very personal... ah, I want to give you a quote from the interview: "I always try to be honest when I write songs. And thats the reason most of the songs don't deal with politics..."

ARCATERA - The Lot Of Men To Suffer And Die CD

Found this great band while searching new and unknown artists for the Schweden-Punk compilation tape. Great crustpunk. Fast, angry and furious... can't get enough of this stuff!!! They released a 7" together with Reign Of Bombs and one with a Turkish band. This CD was made in 2006 and I think it's time for a new album!!!

SJU SVARA AR - Demo CD

Not original artwork! Found that pic at their myspace site and like it! This band founded in 2001 released a demo and recorded a 7" which never was released. In 2003 they quit playing... but now, more than seven years later they finally finished their debut album. Here you can download their first demo. You ask about their msuic? Ok, I'll quote a sentence from their biography: "Our goal was to do simple and melodic punk with politically charged but still personal lyrics in Swedish." Timo from Alerta Antifascista records wrote about their actual album: "This is the best punk record since the Assassinators LP!" and he's right!!! Sju Svara Ar is a kind of All-Star band, the members play in other bands like Burning Kitchen, Asta Kask, To What End, Wolfbrigade... and I hope they will find a little bit more time for this band I don't have to wait seven years again for a new record...

BURNING KITCHEN - Damn If You Do... 10"

Wow, this record was first released in 2001, very fast sold out and also the second press two years later is really hard to get. It's not easy to find out any informations about this band. I heard there is an overlap with the band "Imperial Leather" but I don't find anything about it and YEAH, they will play this year at punk illegal, so maybe I can give you some informations after that event... ah I found one thing. In 2002 a band called "Sju Svara Ar" recorded their first demo and Josefine, who is the singer of Burniing Kitchen is at the vocals there, too. So check out this band, too, if you like Burning Kitchen...

KONTROVERS - st LP

Hell yeah, this is one of my favorite bands from Sweden. Hard and rough. They started in 1996 with very traditional ScandiCrust, but later they changed their style, they developed a more advanced, faster and more aggressive style. Their homepage is abandoned since 2006, so I don't know if there is coming something "new" from this band in the future...

MISANTROPIC - Insomnia CD

The cover is taken from the LP, which is out since a couple of days. Visit their website to order it directly from the band! The same songs were released as CD in 2010 and that's what you get here! Crustpunk with mostly female vocals inspired by many great UK bands like Doom, Extinction Of Mankind and so on... Misantropic are from Umea and sadly I missed them at last punk illegal... I hope I'll get a new chance to see them live...

TO WHAT END - The Purpose Beyond LP

I own this record since more than 6 years. I didn't listen to it that often, but regularly. For me one of the best crustbands with female and male vocals on it. Powerfull, fast forward and at the same time very intensive. "The Pressure Is Gone" is one of my all time favorites song. Sadly I heard nothing new from this band for a long time.. I still don't know if they are are active nowadays...

TOTALT JÄVLA MÖRKER - Söndra & Härska LP

Ah, after the last bubbelgum posts we finally arrive at angry music again. Together with M:40 this band play in their own league. For sure, you can always read and listen band infos that promise you a new spectacular genre and style of music, no band has played before... all bullshit, but there at not so many bands (I know...) which play these black metal influenced style of crustpunk without loosing speed, singalongs and anger Totalt Jävla Mörker use to play. And all of the songs you can get here are filled with it! Here it full blast and banish your neighbours!

THE HIVES - a.k.a. I-D-I-O-T 10"

Maybe one of the most popular "punk" or better underground bands from Sweden. Nowadays the play only big festivals, but I think their music still fits in a smoky club perfectly. I really like the Hives and especially their first output, this 10". Yesterday I saw the Addicts playing their hitsong "Numbers" and while listening to it I thought about this Swedish band and their debut. And now you can think about it, too... haha.

REGULATIONS - Electric Guitar LP

I saw their first longplayer many times in several distros at liveshows. It seemed this record is available everywhere. I didn't know the band, didn't have any idea about the music they play and the artwork was super ugly, so I never bought the album. Some years later I found their third longplayer "To Be Me" - a really great one and since then I become a fan of the Regulations, although I never bought their debut album until now... This album, their second one (at least I think so) you can get here. Some would say 80ies influenced hardcore in the vein of Minor Threat or Blag Flag, I would say, maybe they are right but I never listen to old 80ies hardcore... there are so much actual bands you can listen to... to come to the point: I don't like Minor Threat or Blag Flag but I fucking love the Regulations!!!

“Lie, Cheat & Steal” LP/CD released 2005 on P.Trash Records. Haha, for sure the band can't hear it anymore... if you like The Hives or Henry Fiats Open Sore you will also like The Manikins. It's a few years ago I was really into Garage Punk and LoFi stuff and hell yeah, it's really long time ago I listen to music like that but this was a special recommendation of my buddy Maz and I have to thank him for this! VICIOUS IRENE - Taking The Night Back EP

Vicious Irene is an all grrrl punkcrew from Gothenburg, Sweden. Playin melodious punk, mixing d-beat with rock'n'roll and harmonies. Their style is raw, to the point, pissed off. The vocal melodies are right on, the lyrics are simple and straight forward ideas of breaking norms in society. Just a few weeks ago I met them in Kiel and saw them live. It needed some songs, it was that loud I had to use earplugs (the first time in my life...) but especially the faster songs were grrrreat! This single is released in 2004, there is one released a little later and at the moment they are working on their first longplayer! I am really looking forward to it!

Hmm, seems this great band split up. It's a really cool bandname, on the one hand a famous jazzcore band named their second album this way and on the other hand Mr. James Bond himself was scared of Disco Volante in Ian Flemming Thunderball. Great punkrock and the song "It's Your Funeral" is a goddamn catchy one. A fucking hit! The whole album is very melodic, clear voices and English lyrics. DÖRRTERROR / GLÖM DA – Split EP

Hardcore punk at its best! This stuff has to be pressed on a longplayer, especially the Dörrterror side  is all over too fast. Only three songs, raging hardcore punk with two singers that give everything they have at live shows. Breathtakingly, heart-stopping and stunning. I remember them playing in Flensburg and making a great show. So much energy on stage both singers have to take a longer break after each song. Their announcments attasted a political awareness, sadly there is no translation on the lyricssheet. But for more informations about the band, check out the interview I did with Johan, one of both singers in this zine. Ah, forget to mention Glöm Da!. What can I say about them? This band is really hard to get. I never saw them live or got just the possibilty to visit one of their shows. They make themselves scarce. Some weeks ago I read an interview in the German zine Plastic Bomb. They seem to be supersweet people, regarding to the music they play. It’s supersweet, like a huge sundae with chocolate, candy and whipcream on top. Oh I love icecream, and oh I love Masshysteri. Sometimes the voice reminds me of the fantastic Assassinators. But Masshysteri are much more smooth than the Danish band. This is the perfect soundtrack for a long car ride, a relaxed bath or reflective hours!

VICTIMS – A Dissident LP

You get what you expect! This is the fifth longplayer of Stockholm crustpunk attack No.1. And when I write you get what you expect I assume that you know their former albums. If not – run to mummy and cry! This album is a killer, although their forth longplayer was named „Killer“ - in my opinion their worst one, but if any other one is brilliant, the worst one means nothing bad – only not as brilliant as the other ones. After the split single with Kylesa and the smasher „On your knees“ I never expected an increase, I thought this would be impossible, but the four guys disabuse me. A Dissident delievers hit after hit, from the first song to the last one. At the moment I'm listening to nothing else. You have to hear it full blast and you'll forget everything. From tip to toe, every muscle is clenching its fist, all viscera are shouting out their anger, even the silly spleen. This is the best medicine for every kind of little aches and pains. But no doctor will give you a prescription, you have to order it at La Familia, Deathwish Inc or Tankcrimes. 13 songs packed in wonderful artwork. A must have!

THE BOMBETTES – Get Of My Trailor, Sailor! LP

After the first two turns on my record player I was really disappointed. I expected something totally different from this LP. Maybe more anger and hatred and less bubblegum and lalala. But it needed some time and some turns more on my record player to realize that the Bombettes are much more than a funny shala-ohohoh girlpunkband inspired by stupid American poppunkbands like Green Day or Bad Religion. It's a very simple sound, old bands like Avengers and X-Ray-Spex come in my mind and even The Epoxies, who are far away of being a stupid American poppunkband. In some cases old-fashioned but that does not have to mean something bad. Most of the lyrics affirm my first accordings. The Bombettes are five girls from Umea and they often sing about partnership, love and sex, they draw a picture of strong and independent women and these topics fits to the Avengers and X-Ray-Spex perfectly. But there are also two drawbacks. First: the voice of the singer sounds too monotone after a while, for me it's not possible to listen to this record more than two times in succession and second: the whole artwork is superugly and hurts my eyes. 10 songs, English lyrics released by Ny Våg.

HÅRDA TIDER - Gatan Kallar LP

Since more than two weeks I listen to this record nearly every day while sitting in front of my laptop. Since then this review is on my to-do-list but it was very hard to find the right words. I am not sure if this is my style of music, anyway they play fast and classic hardcore and all of them can handle their instruments but the spark doesn't jump across. They are not able to set my ears on fire and if there is nothing burning it can't be a blazing record... But I have to stop playing with the fire and adding more fuel to the flames, this record isn't that bad. I can't name it exactly but the four guys out of Malmö don't touch me. I listen to the ten songs while doing other things alongside. Something is missing, it's not catchy enough and even their live gig at Punk Illegal wasn't that good that I had to watch them again and again. Hell yeah, it's nice, but in Germany you say „nice“ is the little brother of „asshole“. If you are into classic and fast played hardcore you should check out this band. I don't warm up to it. 10 songs, One Way System cover, nice... not nice, good artwork and including A1 poster. All lyrics are in Swedish and sadly you can't find a translation or some linernotes. U.X. VILEHEADS – Catch 22 EP

Hell yeah, second ep by U.X. Vileheads with several celibrities from the Umea Punrock scene. Members of Instängd, DS-13 or Regulations (to just name a few) with great powerful punk tunes between the 70s punk and the good old 80s hardcore. Four catchy and melodic songs with a great rough recording, that simply fits to the oldschool impression, I got. On top of that, the artwork is killer, striking and underlines the simple grace overall impression I received while listening to this youngsters the first time. Please record the LP soon, buddys!

PASSIV DÖDSHJÄLP – Häng Döm LP

First of all I have to say something about the wonderful artwork of this record. It's a drawing of an apocalyptic scenery. A priest, a police officer, a nazi, a businessman, a member of kkk and some assholes more were hanged on the gallows (you could start a social analysis about the matter only one woman is hanged by the art director – power is in the hands of men) and some skins, punks and other fringe groups are celebrating a party. Even Inuits, queers and handicapped people are included. This artwork is full of chlichees but I fucking love it. Haha, the Freak Brothers are hidden in the crowd, too. I own this record because of my good friend Micha. He met some band members at the railroad track at punk illegal and put this record in his distro. And yes, because of the artwork I bought it. In the digital age I don't do that much often. Mostly I listen to a band at the internet or saw them live before I buy a record and this time I don't regret my choice. Passiv Dödshjälp play crustpunk with some melancholy elements mostly fast forward. They sang in Swedish but with a look at the artwork I can imagine what the songs are about. They are often compared to Skit System, Wolfbrigade or Disfear and in my opinion these accordings work well. 13 songs released by Halvfabrikat, Future Noir and other labels.

SISTA SEKUNDEN – Åldras Med Stil LP

Third full length by swedens most working and travelling band Sista Sekunden. Inconceivable where these dudes got the time from to record this earcanding hit monster between touring europe, japan and the states, but somehow it works quite well for these buddys. Åldras Med Stil, Sista Sekunden want to age with Style, but how could you age while playing a furious mix between 70s garage punk and 80s oldschool hardcore. I love their style, even though I liked the older, more hardcore influenced, records more. This ones more melodic, more joyful and anthem like. Nevertheless, this record shouldnt be missed in your record collection.

ESKATOLOGIA / DISTRESS – Split 10“

Split album with Eskatologia from Sweden and Distress from Russia. Let's begin with the first side, the Swedish one. You can listen to four dark and heavy crustpunk songs, but unfortunatly the five guys out of Göteburg are not able to create the gloomy atmosphere they did at live shows. Saw them two times and two days one after another and it was fantastic. Only a couple of people in the audience at each show, but Eskatologia delievers a fucking heavy crustpunk set. I don't know if it is up to the record quality or the dubbing, but on this 10“ everything sounds flat-chested and too slight. By the way, song number two: „Cold“ is a goddamn catchy song. Besides these guys are supersweet and nice and it was a lots of fun, hanging around with them. For more informations check out the interview Dominik did in this fanzine. Now you have to flip your record and welcome to Russia. Distress play a similar kind of crust Eskatologia do, but the five songs didn't stay in my mind. It's too regular, too usual, nothing special. Maybe it works on stage, in a dimly club, but not this way. So what do we have below the line? A ten inch record with acceptable artwork, lyric sheet with translation into English or at least liner notes, nine songs, two bands, two countries is overall something between mediocre and outright poor basically because of the bad record quality and the Russian half. Usually I like this record size, it's expensive to produce, a bit more than a single and nearly a full-lenght. But this one I will not listen to that often. Released via Halvfabrikat and many more.

THE BABOON SHOW – Punk Rock Harbour CD

I don't like CDs. I hate this throw-away medium. I prefer the good old vinyl, or even tapes. But for this band I had to make an exeption. After ordering it directly from Sweden and listening to it over hundred times I can say: This piece of plastic is the valuabled one I ever owned. Sadly only 11 tracks and sadly the pleasure is over after 25 minutes, but these 25 minutes are goddamn good ones. The Baboon Show changed their guitar player but everything remains unaffected. And why should you make changes, when everything is perfect the way it is. For me there's no progression possible. This is perfect. I am totally addicted and don't want to write more words about it. Check out the interview I made with Nikki the drummer in this issue. You have to buy this album, you have to see their gigs and you will love it. I promise you!

AC4 – Umea Hardcore EP

After the awesome LP, thats going to be a totally classic in the future punk history, heres the next record named Umea Hardcore 7'' by the new #1 in the Umea punk-rock-universe - AC4. If id be gay Id probably be deeply in love with Dennis Lyxzén, not just because of his Refused or International Noise Conspiracy background, or as a head of the great Umea based hardcore label Ny Vag. No. There seems to be much more behind a man with such an awesome live appereance and attitude. Now back on stage with his new band AC4, he returns back to the old days. 80s hardcore, as powerfull and simple as it can be, ass kicking straight forward stuff and every song a hit! SHADES OF GREY – Freedom / Incarceration LP

All beginnings are difficult. As well as mine with Shades Of Grey. Some years ago I saw them once in Weimar, I think it was their tour with Cave Canem, and after listening to their demo and seeing them live I was very disappointed this evening. That was nothing to write home about and I forgot the quartet from Stockholm. A little later they played in Flensburg and it knocked me off my feet. Was this really the same band I saw before? Wow. This gig was fantastic and I had to buy their split release with their friends Massmörd. Now they finally released their first longplayer and nearly every song is as brilliant as I kept it in my mind. These songs will touch your soul, let you sink in a dark and drastic atmosphere and hold so much intensity. No music to wash your dishes besides, you need some time to dive into their dark world but then you will enjoy it. You wanna know what kind of music I am talking about? Nothing special, it's just dark neo-crust, a style of music so many bands play since Tragedy appeared. Yeah, neocrust is hip and I really like it. Shades Of Grey do a great job and they are much more than a cheap copycat. One of Sweden finest! 9 songs, LP including thick booklet with lyrics and linernots... oh I have to give you a quote: „Teaching should not be compared to filling a bottle with water but rather to helping a flower to grow in its own way.“ by Noam Chomsky. It's about the first song called Indoctrination. A record with heart and intellect, emotion and cruelity. All thumbs up!

BEYOND PINK - The New Black LP

What should I write about the 5 girls out of Malmö? I fucking love them. Beyond Pink is one of the reasons for this fanzine. It all started out with this band, their first gig in Flensburg and the interview I made with Clara. Their first single was very rough and snotty, more in the vein of Bikini Kill, even if they don't wanna hear it... The first longplayer is really great. One of my favorite songs is on it „Walking Bajamaja“ and it's so filled with power, anger and hatred. I got totally addicted to it. After this album they released a five song single, I don't like that much. So I was very excited when I got their new record and fucking hell: These 10 songs are the best, they ever made. Everyone says it, so it must be true. Three times I had the pleasure to see them live and I would do it again and again, every time I can. Powerfull and ass kicking punkrock about the Swedish health system, jogging problems and soda... sounds strange, but that's the way it is. LP comes in colored vinyl (I got a yellow one) and lyrics sheet. They sing in Swedish and English and the Swedish ones have English linernotes. All about a perfect solution. Absolute recommendation! 10 songs released by Emancy Punx Records.

FREDAG DEN 13:E – Under iskalla fanor LP

At first sight this record looks like a deathmetal album. Would fit to the bandname, which is according to one of the first slash-films in 1980 „Friday 13th“. By the way a horrible movie... I expected songtitel like „6666 – Extra Evil“ or „Phonenumber Of The Beast“, but far from it. Fredag Den 13:E is a five piece dbeat/hardcorepunk band formed 2006 in Göteburg and after a demo and two singles they released this first record. Only two songs come along with English lyrics, the leftovers are in Swedish, so I can't say that much about their intention writing songs. The two ones I understand suggests a political awareness. They are against god and religion and for fighting for your dreams and ideals. So let us talk about the music they play. In some reviews I read they sound like Motörhead, but I can't agree, even if I don't know much about this English band. Fredag Den 13:E is more asskicking and more punk than Motörhead ever will be. These guys don't look friendly, but they don't have to, cause they don't play friendly music. It needs anger and hatred and the 13 songs are filled with it. You have to hear it full blast. Reminds me of bands like Victims or Wolfbrigade, but without their catchy feeling. Sometimes it sounds like a copy of these bands, a little bit more originality is missing, but nevertheless it's a solid album. Among others this LP is released by Black Seeds Records. 13 songs and gatefold cover.
